Looking back over weeks 7-9, what in your view was
the 1) most common and 2) most effective strategy for American expansion abroad
in the period 1890-1920. Formal empire? Dollar diplomacy? Americanization? Or an
interplay of all three? (80-100 words, by 5pm Friday October 5)
In the past, forming formal empire may be an effective strategy in the American expansion. It has definitely embedded the seeds of greater American expansion. However, the most common and most effective strategy for American expansion will be the Americanization that has successfully existed in our society for decades. The lifestyles, global culture, food and dress code now are largely influenced by Americanization.People are already used to the situation that Americanization brought and adapted to that. Most significant example that happened recently will be the craze for Apple product.Nine out of ten people are consuming Apple product today.Hence,Americanization is a strategy that cannot be neglected due to the former influence that have been brought to the world.
ReplyDeleteI think "Americanization" was the most common and most effective strategy. "Benevolent assimilation", as what Americans did in Philippine, introduced Western civilization to Philippines, and made them to behave like Americans. Without taking real territories, America became much more influential in some areas like Latin America and South East Asia than ever before. Later in WWI, Wilson brought Americans' ideology to the world. American democracy and freedom began to dominate world politics arena. These successful informal expansions show the power of Americanization. It was the expansion of soft power, a sort of cultural imperialism, enabled United States to become such an informal empire.

All three formal empire, dollar diplomacy and Americanization play a role in American expansion abroad in the period 1890 to 1920. Annexation of the Philippines, American Policy in Latin America and the most common Americanization which is still very popular even until now have proven the effectiveness of all three strategies. Americanization is basically termed as the globalization of US in the world. Who doesn’t know Pepsi and Coca-Cola that is trending in the streets of all big cities? When it comes to migration, US always on top of the list for most of the people.
ReplyDeleteWhile it is clear America promoted its own culture abroad as a way of furthering American influence during this era, this was by no means its most effective method of expansion. Furthermore while America took part in conflicts abroad, such as in the Philippines, America’s decision to shy away from establishing imperialist colonies meant this method wasn’t its most prominent form of expansion. As a result of America’s paternal protection and involvement in matters throughout the America’s under Theodore Roosevelt then under William Taft, America expanded considerably through the creation of a vast informal empire. Thus dollar diplomacy was the most prolific and effective method for American expansion in the period 1890-1920.
